The Serious Business of Being Silly: How B/ERGs Can Use Humor Effectively
Work can be serious. Inclusion work can be even more serious. But humor has long helped people build connection, navigate difficult experiences, challenge assumptions, and say things that otherwise go unsaid. As National Disability Employment Awareness Month comes to a close, join Coqual and The Squeaky Wheel, a disability-led nonprofit and satire publication, for an interactive conversation about what humor can teach us about creating more candid, connected workplace communities.
We'll explore how disabled people have used humor to highlight absurdity and challenge ableism; what makes humor work—or backfire—in a workplace setting; and how B/ERGs can use humor thoughtfully to foster connection, surface shared experiences, and create space for joy alongside serious advocacy.
And we won't just talk about it! In an interactive mini-workshop, participants will get a taste of The Squeaky Wheel's approach and try their hand at finding the funny in some familiar workplace absurdities.
Come ready to participate. No comedy-writing experience required.
